Hart was contracted to provide a complex Solvent Storage, Handling, and Distribution System for an international pharmaceutical company’s new R&D facility.  The contract called for turnkey delivery.  This included process engineering & design, controls & panel design, and detailed piping design from bulk storage to points-of-use.

This system extends throughout the building over nine floors, delivering four solvents with 16 total use points, and 25 waste collection points.

As Hart’s partner, E Tech (Superior Controls) provided automation “know-how” and controls integration for the project.

Hart provided the early programming and design-development stages, then was contracted for design-build system delivery, right through commissioning and start-up.  The turn-key solution involved a combination of pre-fabricated modules and on-site installation.

Services provided by the Hart – E Tech team included the following:

  • Development of P&IDs and an extensive front-end engineering package
  • Participation in the Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)
  • Detailed design of the skids, control panels, double-contained distribution piping system, and hood modifications
  • Pre-fabrication of process skids and modules in Hart’s own Rhode Island fab shop, including a containerized solvent storage and containerized waste collection enclosures for outdoor installation.
  • All automation, programming, and integration with building systems
  • Software FAT at E Tech and hardware FAT at Hart
  • 3D Design and BIM coordination with the CM and other trades
  • On-site installation
  • On-site start-up and SAT
  • Operating and maintenance (O&M) procedure development and on-site training

The system was turned over in August of 2019.

The need for solvent distribution systems of this kind is quickly growing due to the desire for R&D centers located in high-density urban areas.  This triggers the stringent limits for flammable material storage within multi-story buildings.  An automated solvent system minimizes inventories to maintain compliance, with the added bonuses of increased safety and operational efficiency in the R&D setting.

This type of project draws upon the range of the Ƶ’ and E Tech’s capabilities.  Hart and E Tech’s partnership has accomplished numerous solvent handling projects for the pharma and biopharma industries based on proven technologies combined with innovative solutions.  Together we deliver a comprehensive program to meet owners’ complex operational needs.  Key among them are compliance, safety, economy, sustainability and efficiency.
